Lost Lines: The Lambourn Valley Railway
19th April 2008 to 1st December 2008

The Lambourn Valley Railway ran from Newbury into the downs at Lambourn, framed for its connections with horse racing. Passenger services ceased in 1960 but the line to Welford Park was retained to serve the US Air Force base until 1973. When that establishment decided to use road transport the line closed.

These pictures were taken during a visit to the line by the Railway Ramblers: see www.railwayramblers.org.uk

Believe it or not, this is the site of Lambourn station, looking south. The platform ran along the right-hand edge of this road serving the housing estate built on the station site.

The old A4 west of Newbury has long been bypassed by a more modern road. This is the bridge under the original A4 road. On the far side the track bed has been taken over for housing.
