Mid-Suffolk Light Railway: the site of Laxfield level crossing The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway |
|
|
|---|
| The line actually crossed, not where the piece of fence is, but to the right (as far as I can judge from the picture) of the white bush. There used to be a clear "avenue" where the line went, but last time I looked (early this year) it was totally overgrown and difficult to make out.
Hope you have been to the MSLR Museum! (see website) MSLR Museum Archivist |

| You're quite right. I took the photograph at an angle so that the onward course of the line - marked by the line of medium-sized bushes - could be seen. (The alternative angle - from the level crossing itself - simply showed a mass of tangled undergrowth.)
I think I'm right in saying that the taller trees in the background are just outside the far fence line of the railway. The pavement on the right probably stops at the far edge of the level crossing, though I doubt the pavement was there when the railway existed! |

Very interesting if not rather sad pictures.
I travelled on the Waveney Valley line twice, both on tours we organised for the M&GN Preservation Soc. They were in 1960 and 1961; by the time of the latter the central section between Harlston and Bungay had been officially closed so we were the lst people over it. I have some pictures shot from the train and also at the one stop we made at Homersfied.
Ofen look out for Tevetshall Junction from the Norwich main line but have never been able to spot it.
Anyway, many thanks |

| Actually this is not a level crossing per se. It was known as Guineaport crossing after the area of the town. It crossed the lines just East of the East signal box and gave access to the box and pw gangers' trollies as well as the river Camel.

| Ford viaduct was demolished partly due to increasing local concern over traspass and subsequent injury to youths and/or drunkards. A shame, it was a local landmark I grew up with. |

| I lived at 10 Railway Cottages, Meldon, from 1958 to 1964. I have very vivid memories of living in a wonderful place, even the winter of 63/64 had the advantage of no school for weeks and weeks. Bleak at times maybe, but not often. Summers were spent playing freely and it didn't rain all the time! Life was more basic in those days but there was a good community at the time, even though there were so few cottages, there were many children. We only moved away because the railway line was axed and dad, an engine driver, had to re-locate to Portsmouth. I was happy to find this picutre as there seem to be very few about. |

| I lived in no.10 from 1958-1964, unfortunately the other end from the camera. It could be bleak here, especially during the winter of 62-63, but during the summer it could be glorious.
there were no bathrooms and the toilets were bucket and chuckit, no hot water, in fact not long before I moved there all water was pumped from two tap houses behind the cottages. It was a sad day indeedwhen I discovered the cottages had been demolished. |

| Nicholas and Reeve's excellent book 'The Okehampton Line' by Irwell Press says that this viaduct - like Meldon originally started out as a single track structure and was widened after a few years.
The is the current exit from 'The Granite Way' cycle trail heading west from Okehampton until a way can be found to get through Bridestowe station. |

The new gateline at London Waterloo is fitted with smartcard readers. The gates on the Windsor side of the concourse appear to have them in use in connection with the smartcard trials in the Staines area. New Additions 2008 |
|
|
|---|
| Not just the smartcard trial though.
SWT already allows travelcard seasons on Oyster, so the gates on all the platforms have to pass them too, like they do at places like Wimbledon and Richmond.
It is only Oyster pre pay (PAYG) that is not yet enabled on SWT. |
